Butterfly Symbol Explained

What is the symbolism behind the logo of The Simulation?

The border of the circle represents the boundary between inside The Simulation and outside The Simulation. Inside the circle is The Simulation, and outside the circle is “base reality”. But each are equally real.

The circle is also a reference to reincarnation – life as an endless cycle of reincarnation.

The butterfly itself resembles two things:

  1. Butterfly effect – small, tiny things may have huge consequences, the common example being a butterfly flapping its wings causing a hurricane. This website is a butterfly flapping its wings. Hopefully great things will come of it.
  2. It is a reference to Chuang Chou’s butterfly conundrum

Once upon a time, I, Chuang Chou, dreamt I was a butterfly, fluttering hither and thither, a veritable butterfly, enjoying itself to the full of its bent, and not knowing it was Chuang Chou. Suddenly I awoke, and came to myself, the veritable Chuang Chou. Now I do not know whether it was then I dreamt I was a butterfly, or whether I am now a butterfly dreaming I am a man. Between me and the butterfly there must be a difference. This is an instance of transformation.

What is the relevance of this? I am not sure. Are we perhaps a computer dreaming it is human beings? Or are we really just human beings who are dreaming we are from a computer? What way round is it all???

A side note: When I was unwell and had to go onto a psychiatric ward, one of my social workers had Rowe as her surname. This reminded me of this old song:

Row row row your boat

Gently down the stream

Merrily merrily merrily merrily

Life is but a dream
